Embracing the Messy Middle
A guest post from Messy Middle Therapy
What is the messy middle? Let’s talk about it! When starting our private practice, we were brainstorming names. We knew we wanted to focus on life’s transitions, but how could we capture such a wide variety of changes in a single name? We realized there’s a common thread in every life transition: all of them involve the messy middle.
Change can arrive in many ways—sometimes we step into it intentionally, pursuing a new goal or chapter in life. Other times, life thrusts us into it unexpectedly: a loss, a health challenge, a career shift, becoming a parent, or graduating into a world that feels uncertain. No matter how it comes, change can be challenging, uncomfortable, and time-consuming. And yet, it is inevitable—and necessary.
The messy middle is this in-between phase. We all experience it. It’s tender, confusing, and deeply human. Everyone’s experience is unique, but often there are common threads. First, there’s often an unraveling. The old patterns we relied on no longer work, and the new ones we’re trying feel awkward or fragile. It can be hard to trust that they will work—or even that we’ll survive the uncertainty.
In the messy middle, we are shedding, stretching, and relearning. It can bring a mix of emotions: excitement, worry, and impatience. Impatience comes because there is also a period of waiting—the seeds of change have been planted, but growth isn’t visible yet. Not yet. And when the first sprouts emerge, a new identity begins to take shape: a new role, a new title, a new way of being. You may not fully recognize yourself, but you’re learning to hold multiple truths at once, integrating these new parts into your sense of self.
Change is hard. Transitions are hard. Growth is hard. In the messy middle, we’re asked to trust ourselves before clarity arrives, to move forward without the full picture, and to keep going even when we feel anxious. But this is where true transformation happens. This is where healing begins, where resilience develops, and where you step into the next version of yourself—integrating new experiences and knowing yourself a little better.
You aren’t lost. You are becoming.
If you’re navigating your own messy middle, you don’t have to do it alone. Community, relationships, and support are essential. If you’re interested in exploring therapy as an option, book a consult today and see how we can support you along the way.
